The Story
The Memorial Fund is named for José Luis Vela, an El Pasoan who was well-liked, community-involved, and the go-to guy for events and volunteering. He was lost to cancer that was caught too late.
His family asked for a fundraiser in his name. It was a golf tournament — the friends who organized it had known him since school — and it grew from there into a 501(c)(3) with a single purpose: outreach and education for men's early screening. Today the Fund awards scholarships to cancer survivors' families and helps cover travel to treatment centers. The message hasn't changed: be aware, protect. Guys, get checked.
Our mission
The Fund is an advocate for men's education and outreach for early screening of all cancers. A grassroots men's program, but also for everyone needing mental health and health awareness.
The Memorial Fund for Men's Cancer Awareness was created because we all know a father, husband, uncle, brother, son, or friend that has gone, or will go through the cancer experience. The Memorial Fund is for them and the men that have not heard our message: Be aware, protect. Guys, get checked!

Cancer Survivor Scholarships
With your help, we offer $1,000 scholarships to members of cancer survivors' families for their college education.
Flight Expenses for Medical Treatments
We also pay for the flight expenses and medical fees required by M.D. Anderson Houston to provide medical treatments here.
